Tom Perryman is a country music legend. He is a member of the Disc Jockey Hall of Fame, and the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame. His roots are firmly planted in East Texas soil. He got his start in radio in the 40s at KEBE in Jacksonville, TX. He then went on to promote such acts as Jim Ed Brown, Hank Thompson, and even Elvis Presley as a DJ at KSIJ in Gladewater. Tom went on to co-own KGRI in Henderson with none other than JIM REEVES! Monday through Friday 9am to 11am, hear Tom play the legends of country music and tell the stories behind their songs. Thomas E. “Tom” Perryman was inducted into the Country Music DJ Hall of Fame in 1988 following experience in all phases of radio broadcasting and country music since 1947 when he served as announcer, engineer, MD and DJ at KEBE in Jacksonville, TX. From 1949 to 1956, Perryman served in all capacities possible at KSIJ-AM in Gladewater, TX. He called WSM in Nashville, TN home from 1956 to 1958 where he was the first regular DJ to do an all night country show. From 1959 to 1974, he was co-owner with Jim Reeves and general manager of KGRI-AM & FM in Henderson, TX, one of the first full-time country stations in America. He overlapped from 1967 to 1978 as co-owner with Mary Reeves and general manager of WMTS AM & FM in Murfreesboro, TN, the first station to broadcast from the famed Music Row in Nashville, winning the CMA “Station of the Year” in 1966 and a special award in 1970.
He’s served as vice president of the East Texas Broadcasting Association; was a member of the first Country Music Disc Jockey Association board of directors; was named WSM’s “Mr. DJ USA” in 1954; was awarded the Gold Medal at the 1984 International Radio Festival in New York for his production and marketing of the five-hour syndicated radio documentary on Jim Reeves. He also has an extensive background in artist management, booking and promoting.
